Why Faith Community Support Matters

Open Door Mission devoted 89.4 percent of all fiscal 2022 expenses to food, shelter, and life-changing programs for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Heartland. In 2017 Lydia’s House expanded our mission to include permanent housing. We opened our first building of affordable housing in March of 2019 and our second building in May 2022. In 2023 we broke ground on a shelter expansion, in preparation for our 10 year anniversary in 2024.

The Veterans Housing First Program focuses on supportive services, crisis intervention, educational screening, and assessment in areas of mental health, chemical dependency, job skills, and life skills. The top floor is the Permanent Supportive Housing for those who may benefit from living in a stable environment while working or attending school full-time. Lydia’s House provides a place of healing and a voice of hope for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Our transitional housing program is offered for up to two years, and serves as a critical link between emergency shelters and safe, independent living. During this period of healing, residents at Lydia’s House are provided advocacy and resources they need to build a life of hope and self-independence.

The reality is that when a person walks through our doors, they are not initially seeking a complete life change. They are coming in off the streets, leaving the cars or cardboard boxes they’ve called home, and seeking two simple things—shelter and food. Open Door Mission’s Garland Thompson Men’s Center provides emergency services for men in need of immediate assistance. Food, shelter, clothing, and other basic needs are provided, and each man is given case management, which provides the first steps toward preventing future homelessness.

The Rebuilding Lives Center is committed to empowering men with the tools they need to become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community. Each day, Open Door Mission’s campus offers 917 safe shelter beds to people experiencing homelessness. Nutritious meals, safe shelter, and quality care are provided for men, women, and families in need of immediate assistance at Lydia House and the Garland Thompson Men’s Center. Advocates meet with Lydia’s House residents to help complete short- and long-term housing goals, which includes providing referrals to the resources needed to find permanent, safe and affordable housing. Advocates also help residents maintain a safe, clean living environment in their apartments. Lydia’s House encourages residents to use this time of transition to work on counseling goals, if they feel the need for this help. Advocates provide referrals to agencies with services designed for survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.

Rebuilding the Breach Ministries serves to heed the description of the people of God as described in Isaiah by restoring hope to individuals and families while bringing lasting change to the community. Our free Health and Wellness Clinic provides guests with medical visits, diverting hundreds of patients from hospital visits. Each family at Lydia’s House is provided an advocate to help guide them through the process of recovering from abuse.

OUR MISSION:

Each day at Open Door Mission’s free Health and Wellness Clinic, patients experiencing homelessness and poverty are met with quality care and compassion. This on-site clinic meets the unique healthcare needs of our most vulnerable neighbors while reducing the burden on local hospitals and emergency rooms. In July 2022, the Health and Wellness Clinic received a Gold Rating from the NAFC Quality Standards program, recognizing the consistent standard of care provided to patients on Open Door Mission’s campus. The Journey to Work Program focuses on breaking the cycle of homelessness and poverty through personal development, money management, job training, and educational skills. The new, larger building opened to residents, and Lydia’s House grew to serve 12 women and 18 children at a time in confidentially located, furnished apartments. Peer support groups were added to the programs, as well as community activities to provide additional support for the families served by Lydia’s House.

At times, Lydia’s House has a high population of women who are immigrants or refugees. These women often have needs that require additional support from our staff, which can include obtaining immigration paperwork, receiving education, learning English, adjusting to new cultures and building a life in a new country. Our advocates work one-on-one with residents to help them achieve their personal goals, such as furthering their education, finding employment and gaining financial independence. Advocates offer support and resources to help these women move on from the harmful conditions they left behind.

Crime and Public Safety

The WorkNet/GED program provides innovative and free classes for successful career development and employment. The first residents achieved their goals and moved into housing of their own. Volunteers serve as essential office support for staff members in our Development and Communication Departments. Unfortunately, it is also true that religion has been historically misused and misunderstood when applied to different instances of domestic violence. Faith community leaders have not always interpreted sacred texts or offered counsel in ways which were helpful or life-giving to women suffering from domestic violence. Abusers have also commonly used sacred texts or faith teachings to condone or justify their harmful behavior. Religion and faith traditions often play an important role in the lives of those who are affected by domestic violence.

The mission of Lydia’s House is to provide safe, stable and  supportive housing  for women and children in crisis. Mary Albert, Martha Brunell, Dawn Stringfield and Doris Waggoner felt called to begin a ministry for abused women and their children. In speaking with other St. Louis-area domestic violence service providers, they found the community’s greatest need was for transitional housing and support services for survivors of domestic violence. Our social enterprise kitchen, Lydia’s Ladle, empowers and employs women who are victims of domestic violence. Working at Lydia’s Ladle provides residents the opportunity to achieve safe, confidentially located employment and to receive job education and training.

Each day, Open Door Mission serves 4,747 meals to men, women, and families experiencing hunger. Meeting the basic needs of people who are hurting and experiencing hunger, opens the door to empower individuals to create lasting change. A Children’s Program was developed and staffed, and grew to include scouting, summer camping and activities and an after-school program. The Community Education and Outreach Program was added to create awareness of domestic violence and provide resources to the community. A program coordinator was added to the staff to support each woman as she worked toward independence. Women are referred to Lydia’s House by shelter advocates when a need for continued safety and support has been identified.

The childhood poverty rate in Hamilton County is 24% according to the U.S. Two thirds of these children in poverty live in female headed households. The Greater Cincinnati region is 20,000 units short of affordable housing for extremely poor families and has the fourth highest rising rent rate in the nation as of 2022. Two and three-bedroom apartment rentals for families desiring to live independently in an affordable, stable, supportive, sober-living community. A $250,000 capital campaign was launched to provide funds to purchase a multi-family apartment complex. Lydia’s House then sold one of the original buildings and purchased a larger apartment building which was modified to provide a combination of efficiency and one- and two-bedroom units.

The Lydia House also offers life-changing programs to address the causes of homelessness such as—abuse, addiction, or the inability to obtain and maintain steady employment. Lydia’s House offers secure housing and immediate community for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. We have 50 confidentially located, fully furnished apartments where families can find refuge, safety and support. Our transitional housing is one of the largest in the country and the only program of its kind in eastern Missouri.
