Christmas tree fire displaces women, children at Long Beach Rescue Missions Lydia House

All family members are connected to support services, including individual and group resources, to help them build the skills that are necessary not only for surviving but thriving in the wake of trauma. Taking the first step to leave an abuser is a critical time when a woman needs a reliable safety plan. If you were directed to Lydia’s House or found us through an online search, we are grateful to be a resource.

Children’s Program

Proceeds from our Chicken Pot Pies and Very Berry Pies directly support the women of Lydia’s House. Support groups are a safe space for victims of domestic violence to discuss their emotions and personal experiences. Some of the topics addressed are “red flags,” safety plans, women’s health issues and parenting techniques. Support groups are held once a week and childcare is provided for residents. Supportive housing is offered to men, women, and families who may benefit from living in a stable environment for an extended period of time. Residents can live in a supportive housing environment while working or attending school part-time or full-time.

Homeless Prevention

Over the years, women at Lydia’s House have said their relationship with God is what sustained them and provided comfort in the midst of abuse. It was also because of their relationship with God that these women found the strength and courage to leave an abusive relationship. In 2017, Lydia’s House opened a medical clinic to provide well women’s care, sick care, infant and pediatric care, preventative education, vaccinations and routine lab work, which now includes COVID testing. The clinic is expanding to provide additional service hours, a women’s specialty care Nurse Practitioner, and 24/7 pager access for after-hours medical needs. A recently renovated playroom, just 10 feet from where the fire ravaged the common area, was undamaged by fire or water, and women and children were able to return to the shelter on Saturday, Levine said. A few dozen women and children were displaced after a Christmas tree caught fire at the Long Beach Rescue Mission’s Lydia House on Friday, Dec. 22, a few hours after the shelter’s holiday party.

Main Services

Every week, staff and residents share a community meal, which is donated by churches and other organizations. We also have monthly community outings, which have included picnics, hayrides and trips to the movies. Our youth services include an after-school program for children ages 5 years and older, offered 4 days each week to provide tutoring and one-on-one help with homework. Lydia’s House also has a summer program, in which advocates take the children on different group outings including swimming, the zoo and go-cart racing. Our 50-bed Lydia House provides solace and hope in the face of abuse, addiction, financial hardship and abandonment. Lydia House also assists many in finding more acute care facilities, while striving to move all guests into semi-permanent housing.

Free Hot, Nutritious Meals

We rely on crisis shelters and emergency hotlines to serve as an essential first point of contact before residents are transitioned to Lydia’s House for long-term support. Open Door Mission is committed to making high quality, professional healthcare accessible in our community. Our free Health and Wellness Clinic provides guests with medical visits and diverts patients from hospital and emergency room visits. Our expanded Behavioral Health Department works with men, women, and children, helping to relieve mental health challenges.

Why Faith Community Support Matters

Open Door Mission devoted 89.4 percent of all fiscal 2022 expenses to food, shelter, and life-changing programs for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Heartland. In 2017 Lydia’s House expanded our mission to include permanent housing. We opened our first building of affordable housing in March of 2019 and our second building in May 2022. In 2023 we broke ground on a shelter expansion, in preparation for our 10 year anniversary in 2024.

The Veterans Housing First Program focuses on supportive services, crisis intervention, educational screening, and assessment in areas of mental health, chemical dependency, job skills, and life skills. The top floor is the Permanent Supportive Housing for those who may benefit from living in a stable environment while working or attending school full-time. Lydia’s House provides a place of healing and a voice of hope for women and children who are victims of domestic violence. Our transitional housing program is offered for up to two years, and serves as a critical link between emergency shelters and safe, independent living. During this period of healing, residents at Lydia’s House are provided advocacy and resources they need to build a life of hope and self-independence.

The reality is that when a person walks through our doors, they are not initially seeking a complete life change. They are coming in off the streets, leaving the cars or cardboard boxes they’ve called home, and seeking two simple things—shelter and food. Open Door Mission’s Garland Thompson Men’s Center provides emergency services for men in need of immediate assistance. Food, shelter, clothing, and other basic needs are provided, and each man is given case management, which provides the first steps toward preventing future homelessness.

Crime and Public Safety

The Rebuilding Lives Center is committed to empowering men with the tools they need to become self-sufficient, contributing members of the community. The New Life Recovery Program is a Bible-based 12-step residential program focused on personal development. The Journey to Work Program provides money management, job training, and education skills.

Confidential, safe and pet-friendly housing helps victims of domestic violence transition from crisis to safe and stable living. Lydia’s House is the only standalone transitional housing in eastern Missouri and one of the largest in the country. Our work is inspired by the belief that everyone deserves a safe place to call home.

However, it is important to know that Lydia’s House is a transitional housing program, not a crisis shelter or emergency hotline. Advocates meet with Lydia’s House residents to help complete short- and long-term housing goals, which includes providing referrals to the resources needed to find permanent, safe and affordable housing. Advocates also help residents maintain a safe, clean living environment in their apartments. Lydia’s House encourages residents to use this time of transition to work on counseling goals, if they feel the need for this help. Advocates provide referrals to agencies with services designed for survivors of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.

Billionaire investor Leon Cooperman, a business school graduate, said he would stick with a stop on donations which began shortly after the October 7 Hamas massacres. Program and health support comes through a partnership with Sojourner Truth House of Catholic Charities in Gary and Marram Health Center. On Friday when Jeff Levine, executive director of the Rescue Mission, got a call from a manager at the women’s shelter, located in the 1400 block of Pacific Avenue. Additionally, there is covered parking for residents and plenty of street parking for guests.
